September and October are the two strongest months — the marine layer has gone, the ocean is at its warmest and summer crowds have thinned. March to November is the broad good season. Avoid planning coastal mornings in May and June, when "May Gray" and "June Gloom" hold low cloud over the beach until midday or later while inland neighbourhoods stay sunny.

Beverly Hills and Bel-Air are central, quiet and above the marine layer; Santa Monica buys the ocean and easy family days; West Hollywood puts the highest density of restaurants and nightlife within a short walk; Downtown suits concert halls and museums. For a four-to-five-day trip, a split stay — inland then coastal — usually halves the driving.
Yes. PCH reopened to all traffic between Santa Monica and Malibu on 23 May 2025, after nearly five months closed by the Palisades Fire. Through the burn area, between Temescal Canyon and Carbon Beach Terrace, the limit is 25 mph and lane and shoulder closures continue for utility and repair work, with some slope projects running into 2028. We plan the coastal day around the current timings.
