Does the trip have to fall on the date?

Which milestone earns the long-haul trip?

The one where the flight time buys something the shorter flight cannot. A 10th anniversary and a 50th are different budgets and different bodies, and a fourteen-hour flight is a real cost at both ends of that range. Long-haul earns its place when the destination is genuinely unavailable closer to home — an overwater villa, a private safari, Japan in blossom. How far ahead do you book a date that cannot move?

Further than a flexible trip, because you lose the ability to shift by a week. Peak-season and long-haul travel wants six to twelve months; ultra-luxury properties commit eight to twelve months out; private islands and low-density lodges in the Maldives, the Seychelles and Patagonia are gone twelve to eighteen months ahead. If the anniversary falls in a festive window, treat that as the long end — Caribbean festive villas were already about 60% booked for 2026, with average stays past ten nights.

What does a milestone anniversary actually cost?

Forest Travel publishes indicative nightly rates by destination, so the arithmetic is transparent rather than assumed. Italy sits at ~US$1,200 per person per night, Greece ~US$1,350, the Maldives ~US$1,950, Bora Bora ~US$2,050; the working average across destinations is about US$1,500, in a range of US$900 to US$3,000. Repeat the honeymoon, or go somewhere new?

Repeat it only if you can change the vantage point rather than the postcard. Returning to the same coast in a different town, in the opposite season, or by boat instead of by road produces recognition without repetition; returning to the same hotel room usually produces a comparison you will lose. What actually makes a night feel like the anniversary?

Santorini in September: what has changed?

The island is materially quieter than it was, by policy. Santorini has enforced a hard cap of 8,000 cruise passengers a day since 2025, tightened for 2026 by counting each ship's full berth capacity rather than 80% of it; scheduled cruise calls for 2026 fell to 595 ships from 728. Greece also levies a cruise-passenger charge of €20 at Santorini and Mykonos from 1 June to 30 September, dropping to €12 in April, May and October. Is a safari the right anniversary trip?

Yes, if you give it enough nights and put it first. Three nights is the working minimum in the Mara and four to six materially improves what you see; Mara River crossings run late July to late October with the concentration in August and September, and mid-August to mid-September the strongest window. In Botswana the Okavango floods during its dry season — rain from Angola takes about four months to arrive — so water peaks around July and game viewing holds June through October. Two centres, or one place for longer?

Two centres when the second changes the pace, one place when the anniversary is about being together rather than seeing things. The failure mode of a milestone trip is over-programming it: a 25th spent in transit is a logistics exercise with a cake at the end. If you do pair, the flight between the two should be short enough to forget, and the second stop should be the quiet one — a journey that ends in stillness reads as a celebration; one that ends in an airport does not.

What if the anniversary falls in the wrong season?

Move the trip, not the marriage. A February anniversary is poor timing for Greece and excellent timing for the Maldives, where February and March are the driest months of the November-to-April dry season. An August anniversary is the reverse: the Mediterranean is at its most crowded and most expensive, while Bora Bora is mid-way through its May-to-October dry season. Celebrate on the day at home, and take the journey when the destination is worth the flight.

Can the family come for a 50th?

They can, provided the couple keeps at least two nights that the family does not attend. Multi-generational milestone travel works when the group time and the private time are designed separately rather than negotiated daily — a villa or connected suites for the group, and a deliberate two-night gap where the couple is elsewhere.
