Late May through early September, when the days stretch long, the wildlife is at its most active, and the coastal waters and interior wilderness open fully. Your advisor times it to the light, the crowds and your own calendar.

Stay put and wait or chase clear skies

A single dark-sky lodge lets you settle in and simply be ready night after night. Chasing takes you by private vehicle toward wherever the clouds break, trading comfort for a better chance under active skies. Late in the season we usually favor staying put, with chasing held in reserve.

How to do it well

The counsel our advisors give travelers planning this journey:

• Give yourself at least three nights; the aurora keeps its own schedule and patience is everything.
• Late August and September pair genuine darkness with milder, more comfortable interior nights.
• Choose a lodge well away from town glow; ambient light is the quiet enemy of a great display.
• Ask us to arrange a private wake-up service so you never miss the finest hour of the night.
