The short answer

According to the 2026 Virtuoso Luxe Report, a survey of more than 2,400 advisors from Virtuoso agencies in more than 50 countries, the ten most popular cruising itineraries of the year are the Mediterranean, Alaska, the Greek Isles, the Danube, Antarctica, the Caribbean, Northern Europe, Japan, the Rhine and the Galápagos Islands. Cruising runs through the whole report: expedition cruising, ocean cruising and river cruising are three of the year's ten biggest travel trends.

The ten itineraries, and when to sail each

  • The Mediterranean — May to June and September into early October, when the seas are warm and the ports quieter than in high summer. Smaller ships slip into harbours larger vessels skip.
  • Alaska — May to September, with June to August the peak of long days and wildlife; bears are best seen roughly July to September and whales June to September. See the best time to visit Alaska.
  • The Greek Isles — May to June and September into early October; July and August are the hottest and busiest, and the meltemi wind can blow hard in the Cyclades.
  • The Danube — Europe's classic river: Vienna, Budapest and the Bavarian towns, and in the festive season the Christmas markets route.
  • Antarctica — only November to March, the austral summer: pristine ice and courting penguins early, chicks in December and January, whales in February and March. See the best time to visit Antarctica.
  • The Caribbean — the dry season, December to April; the hurricane window, roughly August to October, is the one to avoid.
  • Northern Europe — May to August for Norway's fjords and the midnight sun, with June and July the peak of light.
  • Japan — a coastline best paired with time ashore in the cities and the countryside; see our Japan guide.
  • The Rhine — Basel to Amsterdam, by Strasbourg and Cologne; with the Danube, the other Christmas markets river.
  • The Galápagos Islands — where the national park caps any single vessel at 100 guests, so every ship is small by law.

Which kind of ship for which itinerary

Ocean itineraries — the Mediterranean, the Greek Isles, the Caribbean, Northern Europe, Japan and Alaska — suit the ultra-luxury lines we compare: Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn and Crystal, which sail with a few hundred guests rather than a few thousand. The rivers suit a river ship of around 200 guests, with meals, drinks and excursions usually in the fare; the river lines available through our Virtuoso partnership include AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking. Antarctica, the Galápagos and the high Arctic call for an expedition ship, with landings led by naturalists. The lines are compared in the best luxury cruise lines, and the two formats in river cruise vs ocean cruise.

What it starts from

As a guide, the four ultra-luxury ocean lines start from around US$600 per person per night in an entry suite, double occupancy, rising with the line, the suite and the itinerary; expedition sailings cost more. Forest Travel's planning fee is US$250 per itinerary.

How we plan it

We start from the itinerary and the month, then the ship that fits both, then the suite — in that order, because the best suites on the shortest seasons go first. To begin, speak with an advisor.

Common Questions

Questions, answered.

The Mediterranean, Alaska, the Greek Isles, the Danube, Antarctica, the Caribbean, Northern Europe, Japan, the Rhine and the Galápagos Islands, according to the 2026 Virtuoso Luxe Report, a survey of more than 2,400 advisors. Expedition, ocean and river cruising are also three of the year's ten biggest travel trends.

The Mediterranean and the Greek Isles from May to June and September into early October; Alaska from May to September, with June to August the peak; Antarctica only from November to March; the Caribbean from December to April; and Norway's fjords from May to August. The Danube and the Rhine also become the Christmas markets route in late November and December.

Match the ship to the water. Ocean itineraries suit the ultra-luxury lines Forest Travel compares — Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn and Crystal — with Silversea and Seabourn's smaller ships best for the Greek Isles. The Danube and the Rhine suit river ships of around 200 guests, and Antarctica and the Galápagos call for an expedition ship.

As a guide, the four ultra-luxury ocean lines start from around US$600 per person per night in an entry suite, double occupancy, with Regent Seven Seas from around US$800 and its fares including flights, excursions and gratuities. Expedition sailings to Antarctica or the Galápagos cost more. Forest Travel's planning fee is US$250 per itinerary.

Because the ships are small and the seasons short. Antarctica is accessible only from November to March, and the Galápagos National Park caps any single vessel at 100 guests. Antarctica also tops the 2026 Virtuoso Luxe Report's list of adventure destinations, so the best cabins on the best departures go first.
